Producer and engineer Daniel James answered a couple of questions asked by Hayley Williams’ fans on her latest, second studio album FLOWERS for VASES / descansos.
Having heard Hayley’s initial iPhone recordings/voice memos, I knew I wanted it to feel intimate like you were in the room with her as she played, said Daniel when asked about having a sonic goal for the record. I wanted her voice to be very dry and up front. I also knew I wanted to counterbalance that with moments of sonic space and vastness to reflect the emotional weight of the songs, he added.
I wanted to have a really dry close mic sound for a lot things and with an olf house there are so many random noises and a lot of room ambience, he replied to a question about the biggest technical challenge. The album was recorded at Hayley’s house, in a room designed and prepared especially for it.
